although the character was unarguably on star trek: voyager as a way to attract the male gaze, seven is a fully-rounded, nuanced person with natural development over the three seasons she was on the show. seven has to overcome tremendous difficulties after she is severed from the borg collective. having been a part of the collective since she was six years old, being separated from all the billions of voices she became used to over the course of the next eighteen years of her life is a frustrating experience. initially trying to rejoin the borg, seven eventually comes to embrace her individuality with the help of the doctor, captain janeway, and her other new friends on voyager. she often struggles with remnants of her days with the borg, sometimes being forcefully reminded of immense horrors she inflicted on others, albeit as an unknowing drone. after forging her own new identity, seven becomes an asset to the crew of voyager, though she sometimes struggles balancing her newfound individuality with the necessity of following orders from the captain. seven is an integral part of voyager making its way home, using her intelligence, perseverance, and steadfastness to smooth out the journey’s bumps in the road.
